Goat Cooperative Project – Goat Bank, Gola, Ramgarh

Program Overview

The Goat Bank Program is a livelihood-strengthening initiative designed to enhance the income and resilience of rural and tribal households through sustainable goat rearing. The program provides quality breed goats, scientific rearing training, and veterinary support to marginalized farmers—especially women—to strengthen their economic independence.

By establishing community-managed goat banks, the program ensures easy livestock access, credit alternatives, and sustained income generation. Regular capacity-building, vaccination drives, and market linkage interventions further strengthen the goat value chain. The initiative promotes nutritional security, women’s empowerment, and long-term resilience through participatory and inclusive development.

Our Approach

The program adopts a community-driven, participatory approach to ensure sustainability and inclusion. Work begins with baseline surveys to identify the most vulnerable beneficiaries—with a special focus on women and marginalized families.

Goat banks distribute high-quality breed goats and provide continuous training in improved feeding, housing, and health management practices. Regular veterinary camps, deworming, and vaccination drives safeguard livestock health. Local capacity is strengthened through para-veterinary workers, SHGs, and community institutions to promote ownership and accountability.

Collective marketing and market linkages improve income opportunities, while the approach integrates livelihood enhancement with social empowerment to build long-term resilience against poverty.

The Goat Bank Project in Gola block, Ramgarh district, has significantly strengthened rural livelihoods. More than 500 farmers across Gola, Sutri, Chari, and Hesapora panchayats are now engaged in sustainable goat rearing.

Over 250 women received high-quality goats, enabling them to earn independently and gain confidence. Many women who earlier depended solely on family income are now self-reliant contributors to household finances.

Regular veterinary care, training, and improved management practices enhanced goat health and productivity. The establishment of the Haribandh Goat Gola Farmers Producer Company Limited has provided strong market linkages and business development support.

The project has led to improved income, women’s empowerment, and stronger community resilience and self-reliance.

Implementation Partners

The project is funded by the Government of Jharkhand and implemented through a collaboration between:

• Local villagers and community institutions

Better World Foundation facilitated implementation, training, community engagement, and supported the formation and strengthening of the FPC across multiple villages in Gola block.

Looking Forward

As the project grows, the focus is on scaling impact and expanding outreach across the region. Future priorities include:
