Strengthening Household Nutrition & Self-Sufficiency in Jamui, Bihar
Nutrition Garden Initiative – Jamui (400 Households)

Program Overview
The Nutrition Garden initiative was launched to promote household-level food security, self-sufficiency, and improved nutrition among rural families in Jamui district. By encouraging families to utilise the land around their homes, the program supported the cultivation of leafy vegetables, tubers, root crops, and medicinal herbs that families could use both for daily meals and for managing common ailments.
Better World Foundation helped 400 households across the Sikandra and Khaira Blocks establish their own nutrition gardens, enabling families—typically with 5–6 members—to access a diverse and reliable source of fresh, chemical-free produce. The initiative not only strengthened dietary diversity but also reduced household expenses and provided additional income opportunities when surplus produce was sold.
By integrating nutrition, livelihood support, and traditional herbal practices, the initiative became an essential model for improving community health and resilience during a period marked by economic and food insecurity.
