India is an agricultural civilization and has one of the highest acreage of arable land in the world. However, low agricultural productivity has prevented India from becoming an agricultural powerhouse of the world. Agricultural incomes remain low, especially eastern India.
Better World Foundation along with the Government of Jharkhand have paved the way for a project, which aims to bolster income generation for farmers by demonstrating an integrated farming model that is named Kisan Pathshala. The integrated farming model aims to demonstrate optimal utilization of land and water resources through diversification in horticulture and inclusion of animal husbandry, apiculture, mushroom cultivation, pearl culture, fisheries etc. These different cultivations work side by side for better outputs for the beneficiaries ensuring maximum utility and usage of the available resources.
In addition to being a center of excellence demonstrating agricultural best practices and providing handholding, training, and advisory support to the farmers, the pathshala also serves as the foundation for creation of farmer producer organizations (FPOs). The activities in the farm are undertaken keeping in mind the importance of environment and sustainability aspects like solar powered pumps and drip irrigation.
