Malnourishment has emerged as one of the biggest challenges for human development in India. The country has the highest number of ‘stunted’ children in the world and nearly a third of all stunted children worldwide are to be found in India (Global Nutrition Report, 2018). The situation is extremely critical because the effects of malnourishment are irreversible if they occur at a young age. If not death, it leads to permanent disabilities that render the children ill for the rest of their lives.
Better World Foundation in collaboration with the Government of Jharkhand have flagged off the ‘Nutrition on Wheels’ program with an aim to mitigate the issues relating to malnutrition in the identified areas. The concept of Mobile Nutrition Van has been the highlight with its efficiency in reaching out to the beneficiaries both Severely Acute Malnourished (SAM) as well as Medium Acute Malnourished (MAM) alongside, Pregnant and Anaemic women of the target areas. This helps in bringing them health services to their doorstep through the 15 days camp organised at the village level making it largely accessible. The aim is to establish a comprehensive knowledge bank pertaining to malnutrition in the district and training and capacity building of the Front-Line Workers and the beneficiaries.
Through the program, we aim to bring down malnutrition in the program districts and ensure that as a long-term goal it can be sustainably spread over to other areas facing acute malnutrition enabling the states to tackle this issue by bringing change at the community level and ensure better access to the facilities through the Mobile Nutrition Van.
